Very Hungry DVD

One of our top finds this month has been an animated version of Eric Carle’s classic picture book The Very Hungry Caterpillar. First released by Disney on VHS in 1995 and re-released on DVD in 2006, this collection includes five of Carle’s popular children’s stories lovingly and faithfully recreated for the screen.

Narrated by Roger McGough and Juliet Stevenson, we meet the ravenous caterpillar that munches his way through a week’s worth of food before he transforms into a butterfly. Other shorts featured are Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me, a moving tale of a dad’s love for his daughter; the Very Quiet Cricket, about a cricket who can’t sing until he meets his mate; and the Mixed-Up Chameleon about a chameleon who tries on multiple animal features until he realises he was fine just as he was. The DVD rounds off with I See a Song, a gorgeous medley of classical music and colourful visuals that our 20-month-old made us replay again and again. The Very Hungry Caterpillar DVD breathes new life into an old favourite. Watch and be entranced. Available at Amazon.
