Puppy love

We just had to feature Takkoda after Mr. Cheeks got one of their cute Warhol-esque dog print tops as a birthday gift. Created with animal lovers in mind, Takkoda sell t-shirts and novelty items for kids and adults enlivened with quirky designs of four-legged friends - and the occasional reptile. This Dogs Gallery long-sleeve, cotton t-shirt comes in light blue, vintage blue, hot pink and red and features a parade of personable pups in different headgear. Other popular Takkoda 'pets' include Anthony the Chef (a pig in a cook's uniform), Lulu from Paris (a beret-clad cat) and Flash the Super Hero (a dog complete with cape and eyemask). Each t-shirt comes packed with a mini-quiz about your 'pet', jokes and a doggie key ring. From sizes 6 months upwards. Check the Takkoda web site for stockists.

Bees in the hood

A baby butterfly. Two peas in a pod. A toadstool fairy. Photographer Anne Geddes’ portraits of babies in imaginative poses are loved all over the world. The Geddes brand has expanded to include everything from books and calendars to baby clothing. Even if it’s all a little too adorable for your tastes, you might still get a buzz out of this Baby Bee hoodie from her Baby Bee collection. The black hooded top features bold yellow and black stripes, soft cotton lining, embroidered bee antennae and a funky wings pattern on the back. Just don’t get your little hoodster mixed up with the Baby Bee toy which, frankly, is a little disturbing.

Joy Ride

Boys and cars. Cars and boys. It's almost an inevitable love match. If you don't have space for a ride-on, your shorty can still hit the road with this Little Roadster. The snazzy little steering wheel features a viewing window through which you can see your car 'driving' up a busy high street. Turn the wheel to steer the car and use the gear stick to shift into drive, reverse or neutral. We bought Mr. Cheeks a Little Roadster for his first birthday. It's a little advanced for him (it's targeted at kids up to 3 years old) but the toy is said to help develop hand to eye coordination. He enjoys steering the wheel and pressing the buttons that blare out police, fire engine and ambulance sirens. It makes realistic driving and braking sounds and even comes with its own jazzy soundtrack. Available at Early Learning Centre, UK deliveries only.

High Flier

Two of our son's favourite playthings are a spinning top and a wooden push-along bear that plays the drum when you roll its wheels. It's worth hunting in your local knick-knack shop or humble toy store for great deals on similar old school toys. You can also find a fantastic range of traditional toys at Tish Tash Toys, from push and pull-alongs to dollhouses and finger puppets. If you want to mix classic and modern in true hype baby fashion, get your toddler his own private jet. The Pintoy Aeroplane is a wooden ride-on that comes with full steering, spinning propeller and 360 degree castors at the rear. Suitable from 18 months. Tish Tash Toys are based in North Yorkshire but deliver internationally. Check the web site for more details.

Valentine's in a box

It may not have escaped your notice that Valentine's day is around the corner. If you're the man of the house with two ladies to please (your main squeeze and your little squirt), you might be feeling the pressure. Why not splash out on a deluxe Mummy & Me package from UK gift specialists Happy Box? Created for the 'inseparable pair', the box set includes hers & hers sterling silver bracelets with heartshaped charms, fragranced soaps engraved with Maman and Bebe, and two round, rose-coloured photo frames handcrafted from nubuck leather. The price tag's hefty but it's a gift that will be appreciated long after those roses have withered away. For more gift ideas, visit the Happy Box web site.

Metro Baby

We recently celebrated Mr. Cheeks' first birthday with a small gathering of friends and family, yummy cake, balloons and loads of gifts. Of course I was too disorganised to send out print invitations but next year I might turn to the folks at Metro Baby Cards to design something cute and smart. They have a fab range of cards that can be adapted for birth announcements, invitations and holiday greetings. Best of all, they ensure that your baby's photo remains the star of the show. If you're not too handy with a camera they even have a page of tips to help you get the best shot out of your mini model.nery
